Pokemon Diamond is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS in 2007. It marks the beginning of the fourth generation of the Pokémon series and is set in the vast, mountainous Sinnoh region.
Core Gameplay & Story
- The Journey: You play as a rookie trainer aiming to become the Pokémon League Champion by defeating eight Gym Leaders and the Elite Four.
- Starters: Players begin their adventure in Twinleaf Town, choosing between three starter Pokémon: Turtwig (Grass), Chimchar (Fire), or Piplup (Water).
- Team Galactic: Throughout the game, you must thwart the schemes of Team Galactic, a criminal organization attempting to use legendary Pokémon to create a new universe.
- Legendary Mascot: The version's primary mascot is Dialga, a legendary Pokémon with the power to control time.
Major New Features
- Physical/Special Split: A revolutionary overhaul of battle mechanics where individual moves are categorized as Physical, Special, or Status based on the move itself rather than its elemental type.
- Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection: Introduced online trading and battling via the Global Trade Station (GTS), allowing players to connect with trainers worldwide.
- Pokétch: A "Pokémon Watch" device on the DS touch screen that features various apps like a digital clock, calculator, map, and item finder.
- The Underground: A massive subterranean maze where players can dig for fossils, treasures, and build customizable Secret Bases.
- Day/Night Cycle: A returning feature from Generation II that uses the DS's real-time clock to change the environment, music, and available Pokémon based on five different time periods.
Technical Details
- Graphics: Features 3D-rendered environments mixed with traditional 2D sprite work for Pokémon and characters.
- Compatibility: Players can "Migrate" Pokémon from Game Boy Advance titles (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen) into Diamond using the DS's dual-slot feature.
- Expansion & Remakes: An enhanced third version, Pokémon Platinum, was released in 2008. Faithful remakes for the Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, were released in 2021.
