Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 64 (1999) is the groundbreaking crossover fighting game that launched one of Nintendo's most successful franchises. Developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, it pits legendary mascots from across various series against one another in a unique, physics-based arena brawler.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

Unlike traditional fighters that use health bars, Smash Bros. uses a percentage-based damage system:

  • The Goal: Players must knock their opponents off the stage and into the "blast zones" surrounding the arena.
  • Damage %: As a character takes damage, their percentage increases. The higher the percentage, the farther they are launched when hit, making them easier to KO.
  • Simplified Controls: The game moved away from complex button combos, instead using a single button (A) for standard attacks and another (B) for special moves, combined with directions on the joystick.
  • Items & Hazards: Randomly appearing items like Poké Balls, Fire Flowers, and Bob-ombs can turn the tide of battle, while the stages themselves often feature interactive hazards.

Character Roster & Stages

The game features a total of 12 playable characters:

  • Initially Playable (8): Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, and Pikachu.
  • Unlockable (4): Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness, and Jigglypuff.
  • Stages: There are 9 distinct stages based on the characters' home worlds, such as Hyrule Castle, Peach's Castle, and Dream Land.

Game Modes

  • Multiplayer: The game’s primary draw is its 4-player versus mode, which supports Free-for-All or Team Battles. Detailed guides on these modes can be found on the Super Smash Bros. wiki.
  • Single-Player: A linear "Classic" campaign where players fight through a series of matches culminating in a battle against the enigmatic Master Hand.
  • Bonus Games: Includes mini-games like "Break the Targets" and "Board the Platforms" tailored for each character.
